Glass Suncatcher

Here's a cute little project that can be personalized by using photos or a colorful clipart that will catch the sun's rays and cast a mini rainbow from your window! Using nothing more than window cling decal sheets (you can purchase them in office supply or computer supply stores) and beveled glass that comes in many shapes and can be purchased in most craft stores, you can create a beautiful suncatcher. And the nice thing about it is, if you get tired of the design you can peel the cling decal off and place a new design on it. Great for decorating for all sorts of holidays and occasions! While we used a diamond shape glass piece, circular and square or rectangular shapes are a bit easier to work with when it comes to cropping the photo or clipart to fit on the glass. These glass shapes usually come with a hole already drilled through the top so all you need is a suction cup hanger with a hook and it's ready to hang!

MATERIALS

Inkjet window cling decals (available in most office supply and computer supply stores)

Beveled or flat glass shape (available at craft stores)

Suction cup with hook

INSTRUCTIONS

1) Open a blank page in your graphics program. Portrait orientation is fine for this project since the design will be fairly small. Measure the section of the glass that will hold the decal. If the glass shape is beveled, measure the inside of the beveled area.

2) Choose your photo or clipart and size it to match the area you measured. Print on plain paper first and cut out the design to make certain it will fit properly on the glass.

3) Once you are satisfied with the shape and size of your design, print on the inkjet window cling decal as per the manufacturer's instructions. We suggest that you set your printer settings to Best quality and select inkjet transparencies as the media type. This will insure that the colors printed will be sharp and dark enough to show up on the suncatcher.

4) Let the window cling decal dry for a few seconds. One important piece of advice: DO NOT cut the design out before peeling the backing off the cling decal. Once it is cut it can be quite a task trying to peel the backing depending upon the shape of your design. So, peel the backing off first and then cut out your design.

5) Make certain the glass shape is clean and carefully apply the cling decal to the surface. Press gently with a dry paper towel and you're done!

A simple project with spectacular results that is sure to please!
