Barbie Doll Outfit

Barbie's gone Cyber Chic! With our Cotton Inkjet Fabric Sheets and the templates we've prepared for you, you can make your own skirt and jacket for Barbie with no sewing needed! Just a scissors and some fabric glue and some imagination! For our Barbie's outfit, we scanned an animal print fabric and used that for the pattern on her skirt and jacket. You could take it even further and make her a headband and a matching purse. Just think about the possibilities! What little girl wouldn't love the idea of creating her very own Barbie fashions with these two simple templates? See the links at the bottom of this page. When each template opens, simply right click and select "Save Picture As..." and save it to your drive. Then open in it your graphics program, apply your own pattern, cut, glue and go!

MATERIALS:

Cotton Inkjet Fabric Sheets

Barbie Top and Skirt templates (see Links below)

Scissors

Fabric glue

Small piece of adhesive-backed Velcro

INSTRUCTIONS:

1) Download the templates we have prepared. When you click on the links below and the template opens, just right click on it and select “Save Picture As…” and select either .bmp or .gif as the file type and save it to the directory of your choice.

2) Open a blank page in your graphics program and import the templates to your page. If you are making the top and skirt with the same pattern, you should be able to fit them both on one page but may have to rotate one or the other.

3) Resize the top so that it measures 6” wide by 8” high and rotate 90 degrees if necessary.

4) Resize the skirt so that it measures 6” wide by 8” high and rotate 90 degrees if necessary.

5) Place a rectangle with an outline and no fill on the page and resize it so that it covers both the jacket and the skirt (if you are using the same pattern for both). Fill the rectangle with the pattern or color or clipart of your choice.

6) Layer this rectangle beneath the templates so that the outlines for the template show on top of the pattern or color.

7) Print a test page on plain paper. If you are satisfied with the output, you can now print it on the inkjet fabric sheet.

8) Allow the fabric sheet to dry for about five minutes and then peel off the backing sheet. Cut out the jacket and skirt from the fabric sheet. PAY ATTENTION to where the “A’s” and “B’s” are on the jacket and which is the front and the back (you can mark them on the reverse side of the jacket with a pencil). Make the slit at the front of the jacket up to the neck hole and then cut out the neck hole.

9) Run a thin bead of fabric glue around one of the “A” curves on the printed side of the fabric. Fold it in half and carefully line it up with the “B” curve opposite it. Press gently to make sure the glue adheres. Repeat with the other “A” and “B” curve. Once the glue dries a bit, you can turn the jacket right side out.

10) Place a small piece of self-stick Velcro (the small Velcro dots work well for this) on each of the inner corners on the back of the skirt. This will serve as the closure for the skirt.

Voila! Custom designed clothes for Barbie! And once you do this a few times you will be able to modify the templates to make the jacket or the skirt longer and maybe even design a pair of pants to match!
